Chapter Three Modern Irish VSO
نویسنده
چکیده
iv) Evidence from ellipsis phenomena (following McCloskey 1991) argues for a verb raising analysis of Irish. However, following McCloskey (1992b), there is strong evidence from adverbial placement that this is not raising to C° (in contrast to the situation in Old Irish where raising to C° does seem to be the correct mechanism for deriving VSO). With these conclusions in mind we now turn to the option of deriving VSO by raising the verb around the subject to an inflectional head.

Chapter Two A Short History of VSO Order
This chapter is the first in a two-chapter discussion on the nature of the derivation of Verb-Subject-Object (VSO) order. In this chapter, I will present a short history of the various analyses of the derivation of VSO in the literature,2 for both Irish and for VSO languages in general. In chapter 3, I focus narrowly on the syntax of Irish, where I present some previous analyses of Irish within...
متن کاملSome Evidence from Old Irish
In the generative paradigm, there are at least two schools of thought about the derivation of VSO order via verb raising. One holds that the verb raises to the highest complementizer position (C°) of the matrix clause, in a manner familiar from den Besten’s (1981) analysis of verb second languages like German and Dutch. The other holds that the verb is not in C° at all; rather it appears on the...
متن کاملThe role of definiteness in the impersonal passives of Modern Irish: Towards an RRG characterisation
This paper is about the impersonal passive construction of which modern Irish, a VSO language, has two forms. The impersonal passive form occurs with all verbs of Irish, across all tenses, whether intransitive or transitive. In the second form, the impersonal passive form is to be found productively with the substantive verb (one of the two verbs of ‘to be’ in Irish) across all tenses. It does ...
متن کاملNon-Verbal Predication and Head-Movement
This thesis surveys the interaction between non-verbal predication in matrix clauses and processes of head-movement. Focusing mainly on the syntax of Modern Irish nominal predicates, it is claimed that matrix non-verbal predication can occur without any verbal support. When this happens, non-verbal predicates bear inflectional features directly and behave just like verbs with respect to process...
متن کاملChapter Four Forms of the Verb To Be in Irish
This chapter begins my three chapter discussion of the behavior of non-verbal predication in Irish. In this chapter, I discuss the distribution and syntactic behavior of two different copular constructions in Irish: theTá (Bí) and Is1 constructions. In chapter 5, I look in detail at a word order alternation within the Is class of constructions. The final section on Irish copular constructions w...
